In the oil and mine drilling process, the correct way to deal with lost circulation is to add Mineral fibers to the drilling fluid.   Mineral fibers are mainly used in drilling to address issues such as wellbore stability and leakage.

 

Mineral fibers as drilling fluid additivies

1.  Enhance the performance of drilling fluid: By adding mineral fibers in a certain proportion to the drilling fluid, the viscosity and shear force of the drilling fluid can be increased, enabling it to better carry rock chips during the circulation process. At the same time, the suspension ability of the drilling fluid can be enhanced to prevent the sedimentation of heavy minerals such as barite.
- Improve the filtration loss performance: The fibers can form a dense filter cake on the well wall, reducing the filtration loss of the drilling fluid to the formation and avoiding well wall instability caused by excessive filtration loss.

2. Deal with the problem of well leakage
Leakage Sealing Construction: When leakage occurs during the drilling process, mineral fibers can be mixed with other sealing materials (such as calcium carbonate, sawdust, etc.) in a certain proportion to prepare a sealing slurry and pump it into the well. The fibers interweave within the leakage channel, forming a physical barrier that prevents the continued leakage of drilling fluid. For example, when leakage occurs in fractured formations, the fibers can fill the fractures and form bridges, combined with other
particle materials to enhance the sealing effect.

3.Maintain the stability of the wellbore wall
Preventing formation water swelling: Some mineral fibers (such as sepiolite, montmorillonite, etc.) have the property of adsorbing water molecules. They can reduce the free water in the drilling fluid from entering the shale formation, thereby inhibiting the water swelling and dispersion of the formation and maintaining the stability of the wellbore.
 

The role in drilling operations
- It can interweave with each other in water to form a network structure, providing the appropriate viscosity, shear thinning property and thixotropy for the drilling fluid. This enables the drilling fluid to maintain good fluidity and stability under different temperatures, pressures and shear rates, facilitating the circulation of the drilling fluid within the well, enhancing the rock-carrying capacity, and ensuring the uniform distribution and carrying of drill cuttings in the mud.
- Enhance salt resistance: Mineral fibers have a low surface charge density. Even in salt-containing systems, such as saltwater drilling fluids or when encountering salt-bearing formations during drilling, they can still maintain dispersion stability and are less likely to undergo flocculation. Thus, they can preserve the rheological properties of the drilling fluid and ensure the normal progress of drilling operations.
